Audio Speed & Pitch Changer for Podcasts

Change the speed of a recording from 0.5× to 2× without changing the pitch of the voice, or shift the pitch up or down by up to 12 semitones without changing the length. The two settings are independent, and the new duration shows before you export. It opens MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, AAC, OGG, and AIFF files and exports MP3 or WAV.

How to change speed or pitch

  1. Choose a recording. Short pieces like ads, intros, and clips work best.
  2. Set the speed. The estimated duration updates as you move the slider.
  3. Leave pitch at 0 to keep the voice natural, export, and listen.

Podcast uses

  • Fit an ad read to its slot. Divide the current length by the target. A 33-second read fits 30 seconds at 1.10×. A 63-second read fits 60 seconds at 1.05×.
  • Meet a time limit. Trailers, network promos, and radio breaks often have fixed lengths.
  • Tighten a slow voiceover. 1.05× to 1.10× often saves a re-record.
  • Check a quote. Slow a fast speaker to 0.75× when writing show notes or a transcript.

Don’t speed up whole episodes. Listeners already choose their own playback speed in their app, so a sped-up file played at 1.5× sounds rushed. To shorten an episode, it’s recommended to cut dead air and tangents instead.

Pitch changes

Twelve semitones is one octave. A shift of one or two semitones can match a sound effect to the key of your theme music, or create a character voice for a fiction or comedy segment. Speed changes up to about 10% and pitch changes up to about two semitones are hard to hear on speech. Larger changes can sound metallic.

Pitch shifting does not anonymize a voice. Anyone can shift it back by the same amount. For confidential sources, have a voice actor re-record the words, or publish a transcript.

Frequently asked questions

How long will the new file be?

Divide the original length by the speed. A 10-minute file at 1.25× lasts 8 minutes. At 0.8× it lasts 12 minutes 30 seconds.

Can I change pitch without changing speed?

Yes. Leave speed at 1× and move only the pitch slider.
